Cross Reflections
I live in a lake community where the Anglican/Protestants let you do anything you want; unless it's against the law of the land or commandments. There are also lot of Baptists who don't allow drinking of alcohol, Catholics who don't allow suicide, divorce or sex until marriage, high-brow Existentialists studying deals with true universal situations, Jewish people adhering to Eva Braun's Kosher Cookbook and the Scientology group of organized entrepreneurs.
What is a cult anyways? Is that like a groupie-fan of a musical group or TV series? Since 1900, some twenty million (20,000,000) North Americans have joined close to one thousand (1,000) religious cults. A large number of these cults have been criminal rackets. They succeeded for varying periods because they promised health, prosperity and security for the frustrated individual. Most of the promoters have made money and many have become wealthy through substantial gifts from fanatical followers.
Of the hundreds of camp meetings that have been held in North America, the largest of these outdoor religious gatherings took place in Kentucky. The concept of a six (6) day service originated there. Throughout the duration of the event or experience, seventeen (17) ministers alternately preached for hours at a time, before an estimated thirty thousand (30,000) in attendance. On the last day, the emotional excitement became so intense that three thousand (3,0000) people fainted and five hundred (500) others 'jerked' and 'barked' until they fell unconcious from over-exertion and fatigue.
India is emerging as a major economic power. Hindus search for reincarnation. In their religion, the Hindus are the world's greatest worshipers of gods & goddesses. They have three hundred and thirty three million (330,000,000) which is equivalent to eight (8) for every one of the forty-one million (41,000,000) Hindu families. Throughout India's history, half of all human deaaths from starvation have been, and still are, among the Hindus of India. Their religion teaches them to sanctify and protect animal life. They not only allow monkeys, rats and other pests to eat and damage their crops, but they use much of their food to maintain animals in idleness. They also consider sacred their 100,000,000 head of cattle. They maintain that the methane produced from these animals do not contribute to the global warming of the planet that is machine. In the small towns of India, Hindu temples provide other services unavailable elsewhere in the community. For instance, they have facilities for bathing, and washing clothes, maintain gambling rooms and sleeping quarters, serve meals and provide entertainment by dancing girl. When it comes to sex, clothing has a strong significance.
Muslims believe in paradise, which according to their prophet Mohammad, is according to the Koran. Every Mohammedan who lives a righteous life on Earth will receive eternal rewards befitting a king when they die and go to Paradise. There, after a feast of three hundred (300) courses, they will be endowed forever with the health and vigor of a young person. Then they will be given a palace with eighty thousand (80,000) servants and seventy-two (72) gorgeous wives possessed of perpetual youth and beauty. Mmm ... sounds like a delightful place, especially if you are a man.²
